Youth Rules Lockdown 2021
We ran this as a schools based arts competition, designed to engage local young people in expressing how they have coped with this uniquely difficult period. We asked participants to creatively respond to the brief: ‘How have you stayed safe and positive throughout lockdown?’ and for their relevant school, college or community group to submit the works on their behalf. All participants were between 10-18, live or study in the Hall Green locality, and had a broad range of learning abilities.
The name of the competition reflects our aim to explore the concept of ‘rules’ from a youth perspective. The notion that we have all been subjected to the same ‘rules’ has been a dominant one in all our lives and in public conversation for over a year now, but we know that it is not this straightforward. We wanted to explore what the rules meant to young people, how have they responded to the imposition of strict rules on them without any say, what do they believe should (have) happen(ed) instead?
